Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Who can join the band?
A: Just about anyone! If you play a musical instrument and are in high school or older, you are welcome to join.
Q: Do I have to be good at playing an instrument to join?
A: Certainly not! Our band members come from many different ability levels; some have played all their lives, some are just starting, and some were regular players who gave it up and have returned after many years.
If you are still learning, feel free to just play the parts you feel confident with. You will find that if you are playing at a beginner’s level, there will be someone in your section willing to help you if you need it.
If you are rusty, don’t worry, that won’t last long! The band members are all very supportive, and the environment in the band is warm and encouraging.
Q: How can I find out about upcoming concerts?
A: You can view a list of our upcoming concerts on the Home page.
Q: How long do rehearsals go for?
A: Rehearsals run from 7.30pm to 9.30pm on a Tuesday night. The room is usually open from 7.30pm for anyone wanting to come in and help setup and/or tune. We usually have a break around 9pm for 10 minutes.
Q: What is the uniform?
A: We have two uniforms, one for our “Formal” engagements and the second for “Casual” engagements.
- Males – Black shirt, trousers, shoes and socks.
- Females – Black blouse, slacks or (minimum mid-length) skirt, or black dress and shoes.
For casual events, the black shirt / blouse, is replaced by the band polo shirt. Polo shirts are available to purchase from the band. There is a limited supply available to loan until you can purchase your own. For more information, please talk to a committee member.
Q: What if I cannot attend a concert?
A: We ask that if you know that you will not be able to attend the concert, please notify your section leader in advance. This will help with distributing key parts to members.
